I've done a PH & Google search but nothing much has come up (mainly as I'm not getting anywhere with what key words to use).

I want to find out if there's any other off-the-shelf 'boxes for the mid-mounted traverse (rwd) for the standard rover k-series engine. I think the gearbox that comes out of powertrain with the k-series is a PG-1 (e.g. for the old Elise), but I don't know of any others from a good source - like Quaife for example.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Not bothered if it's not sequntial, but would prefer a manual with manual clutch (if there's that much choice).

TIA.

The standard Rover PG1 gearbox can be used for FF transverse as in their production cars, or as mid/rear transverse. Quaife used to list 6 speed H pattern gear kits and 5 or 6 speed sequential gear kits as well as dog engagement gears for the PG1 box but I can't see anything on their site at the moment. The only other box I can think of is the 4wd box as used in the Freelander.

Cheers. I'll chase up Quaife for a full catalog.

I used the gemini box, it is a 6 speed sequential dog box and only weighs 30kgs plus all of the holes are the same

I didnt like the quaife box as by the time you fitted adaptor plates it was heavier and wider, plus you needed to make new mounting brackets

Thanks for that mate! How easy do you think it'd be to live with in a road car (given I have no experience of using a dog box!)?

Where did you source the box from? I've been on google, and I can see a lot of pages that reference their rally cars have gemini boxes, but nothing for the company itself, or even a retailer. Maybe I'll have to dredge through my autoexpresses and circuit drivers to find an ad for them?

Cheers!

It's all hypothetical right now, so just ballpark figures, but when it comes to it not too much, say 2k (any more an the misses would go spare) and I have no problems having a recon' 'box rather than new. Is this stupidly low?

urm yes

The quaife is about 5k and you will need a fair bit of engineering work with that. The gemini boxes were 12k new.

I doubt you would pick one up that is ready to fit straigt in for much less than 4k

Gemini were bought out by Recardo, but the rover rally team workshop have some kicking about still. (thats if they are!)

What car is it going into and what engine ?
Rover fitted the PG1 into prety well all of thier cars including the 220 and 420 turbo's so they are able to take a reasonable amount of power. Not all PG1's have the same bellhousing though as they were mated to the k, kv6 and a couple of other engines but the internals were all the same AFAIK. Because they were usaed on such a variety of cars there are something like 14 different sets of gear ratio pairs which can be mixed and matched to give you more or less whatever ratios you want and a couple of different final drive ratios as well. Quaife and others also do a LSD.
If you do break it there are loads of them available at the scrapy, they are simple to work on and you can get bearings and seals from any bearing supplier.
Unless you are looking at giving this box serious abuse I would give it a try first ( I am trying one with a Honda 3.2l turbo V6 and unless it needs rebuilding more than once a year I will consider it a succesful match )

Well, looks like I'll be sticking to the PG1 then! I could stretch to maybe 5k, but the misses really would kick me out whilst ranting on about how she could have had new windows/patio/car/conservatory/extension/ad infinitum for the 10-15k mark, hell, I could get an Elise S2 for that money!

It's only going to be in a road car that goes on the track a fair bit and some training (ab)use. It's all really just down to me not liking the feel of the gearbox; the throw feels too big, the linkage too slack, and the odd change can feel clunky. It's fine for a utility car, but in a higher performance car it feels out of place.

At least there's a lot of them around for me to get a couple of spares to play with (hadn't even thought of that Ken, cheers!)

Thanks for the info guys. I think I'll look at sorting out what I don't like about the 'box before I go and spend a lot on a new one. I'll keep quite now
