Heelp, my car is making a thuding/popping sound near the front drivers wheel when the car is not moving! I've got to do some serious miles tomorrow and don't want to kill the car any ideas?

Someone has suggested that it is the fuel pump?

1.4 polo mk4

Thanks all

Valve problems or a leaking exhaust manifold? Open the bonnet while it’s running and take a look, see if you can find the exact source yourself. Cant see how it could be the fuel pump?

Almost impossible to diagnose via internet without lokking/hearing personally. Don't know the 1.4 engine myself, but suspect that the only stuff that would be moving in that area when the car is stationary would be the belt driving the alternator and water pump from a pulley on the crankshaft. Maybe a loose pulley or a water pump that is on the way out?

Possibly a fan belt shredding.

That doesn’t sound right…carbon inlet valves? Usually they are made of aluminium/titanium/steel alloys filled with a thermally conductive liquid (Sodium often)? I’m not sure you should be able to hear anything TBH, usually excessive noise indicates energy being used to generate it and often wearing. Are you sure you don’t mean carbon build up on your valves?

If i cover the air feed which is near the drivers side wheel you can't hear it. It only does it when the car is at idle

Yes the carbon cannisters can be a little noisy. Not to be confused with inlet valves, :-)
