Hi
I'm asking this question on behalf of a mate of mine so if my responce is vague please bear with me.

He's tuning a 4.6 V8 with a view to going up to a big valve head with a 214 kent cam.

Would he need to use different pistons or could the originals be modified in any way ?

Should be ok with stock pistons. I've used the 214 without any clearance issues.

My 3.9 originally had flat-top pistons with valve pockets machined in: I replaced them during the rebuild with standard Rangey dished 3.9 ones, but I got a mate to machine the valve pockets just in case!

Surprised that a 214 didn't require pocketed pistons tbh, is it a case of a composite head gasket gives you just enough clearance . I'm sure Rob from V8D will give an answer soon.

Providing he hasnt decked the block and is either using early heads with a tin gasket or 4.6 heads with a composite gasket he will be ok, if he is using the 4.6 heads with a tin gasket he will need to check the clearence's, allow around 40 though piston to valve clearence, however in all honesty i would assume he is having it balanced if he is doing a fair job and if so the cost to have the pistons pocketed is pence really!

Hi

Thanks for all the info, I've passed it all on and he's taking the 'better safe than sorry' route and using 'dished' pistons
