Anyone got any views on using lightweight shockproof gear oil in a syncro gearbox ?
More specifically the gearbox is a transverse syncro box with a Quaife atb lsd mated to an engine producing about twice the torque it was ever designed to handle. So would the shockproof oil help the box cope with the extra load and would the gear change quality be severely affected ?
Or should I stick with a good 75w90 and just repair the gearbox as it gets worn out ?

My opinion is that you are better off using a fully synthetic oil designed for gearboxes.

A good start is the Ford gearbox oil meeting spec WSS-M2C200C which is a Castrol manufactured full synthetic. It has great synchro compatability and is available from any Ford dealer in a Motorcraft bottle.

Mobil 1 75W90 is good oil, but the synchro action isn't as good as the Castrol formulation for Ford.

With a lsd it needs 'special' gearbox oil not to ruin the lsd I would think.

The Quaife ATB ( Torsen ) diff does not require any special oil.

Only plated type LSD's require such oil, or additives.

I only ever used the Shockproof gear oil once, in my old Toyota Supra turbo gearbox. I thought it was crap for that application. I swapped to Castrol Syntrax and it was soo much better.
