Can't give you a cost but having done a gearbox change on my V6 mondeo it is not an easy job!! Assuming the car has a subframe, this will have to be removed. I would think that at least a days labour would be required if a garage does it. It took me 2 days on my own to do mine as I took the whole engine out as it was easier.

a 1.8 vectra shouldn't cause too much grief if you have the tools and space. My mate can get a box from a fiesta in 15 mins, but he has ramps and gearbox cradles and engine hold bars.I know another mate and I changed a box from an escort FWD and we took the week end as the clutch was shot to and the plastic adjuster on the pedal. This included washing the box off and doing a few other jobs too.

I believe the book time is in the region of 6 hours or so because they do recommend you take the engine out, but you can do it by just lowering the n/s front subframe and basically pushing the gearbox into the wheel arch.

Cheers all, thanks for the help.I've chosen a local garage to do the job,and they say 4-6 hours.

Depending upon the car, it may be necessary to remove the gearbox to do the clutch.
In which case, the time should be the same. Putting a replacement 'box in is not harder than putting the original 'box in. (And don't forget to put a new clutch in while you are at it.)
