What would cause the idle on a Engine to hunt?I'm asking as i'm a bit curious to know why this would happen.

Thanks in advance.

It might be an air leak?

The engine in question is a 206 gti on a w.

blocked air cleaner,
dirty/sticking idle control valve
fuel pressure
sticking throttle plate

poor connections on the engine management looms/components.

Doesn't really give you a solid option to check out, but it'll only take 20 minutes or so to unplug and reconnect the wiring plugs. if it's still bad whip the Idle Valve off and give it the good news with some carb cleaner.

If the engine is anything like the one on a gti-6 306, then a usual suspect is the stepper motor, which is simply a pressure actuated diaphram with some variable resistors, that moves in and out to steady the idle according to intake air conditions.

This clogs up stops working. Has been known to go on cars that age.

Might be worth doing an ECU reset too. Some people laugh at the idea, but my Pug after a day of "unusual" city driving and running hot, stopping etc etc, started to hunt and stall constantly for the next few days.

An ecu reset, then a run upto high temp at standstill, then a GOOD blast and the car is running spot on again.

My 306 gti is on a W plate so similar age as your 206 gti. Worth a try anyway...

Check stepper motor cleaning and Ecu reset in the FAQ. Might be worth trying a good 206 gti related forum or newsgroup if you can find one. Not sure how similar the engines are ancillary wise.

Good luck.

That would be my guess too. Happened on our mondeo. As has been said get the valve off the car and fill with carb cleaner and let it do it's work and then repeat several times and pop it back on.
