Hi all,

The oil leak on my Mk3 Golf (1994, L reg, 1.8CL) has slowly been getting worse.

Any ideas on what it could be? Any possible cost? (A rough estimate would be useful so I know the garage aren't robbing me!)

The engine has done 123,500 miles btw.

The pic isn't great as I couldn't get at the correct angle! Seems to be coming from the lower part of the cam belt cover. Possible crank seal??

Thanks in advance!

It most probably is the crank seal and should not be that difficult/expensive to fix. They may say the pully also needs replacing. Many designs have the oil seal running on a spigot off the back of the pully and the seal can wear a groove in the pully. When you fit a new seal it will sit in the groove and not seal as well as it should hence the replacement.

Ok the plan is to have the crank seal replaced and a new cam belt fitted.

Anything else I should consider before I book into into VW?

At that age, an independent garage will be half the price. What is the car worth relitive to what VW quote for the work? (My old one dripped the same but never got bad enouth to fix -was on 135000 when I sold it)

As well to get the other belts done to as they will need to take them off anyway.

The guy I brought my car off works for VW. £130 to change the cambelt and fix the oil leak. Didn't think that was unreasonable. Going to get them to give it the once over as well pre mot.
