I have a 1983 MK1 Golf GTi, and it has developed what I can only descibe as a diesel type rattle under load.

I have checked the valve clearances, and given it an oil change (which has made a slight improvement, as I went to a thicker oil; 15W40) but under load it still makes the rattle.

Does anyone have any ideas what this might be?? And how I can stop it??

Cheers all,

Ed.

Is this a rattle or a knock?

Its a rattle. It also seems to "pulse" when the engine is on tickover. As in it goes in waves of getting louder then quieter. But I definatley wouldn't say its a knock.

It's listening stick time.
Work your way around the engine with either a piece of wooden doweling or long screwdriver putting one end on the engine and the other to your ear. This way you can trace where the noise is loudest.

If a noise were external then an ali tube works best.

Be very careful where you place it as you could get it tangled in moving parts or give yourself an electric shock.

Hydraulic tappets id say. They make a "cycling" sound from louder to quieter when theyre on their way out.
Not an imminent failure but getting there.

Get em swapped asap. cost for them is around 80 to 100 squids if you do the job yourself.

It seems to be coming from the the back left of the engine as you look at it. I have done a few miles today, and it has quietend (is that a word??) down a fair bit, but there is a very slight rattle under load still, but not even half as bad as it was before I changed to thicker oil.

Check the exhaust manifold...

They *can* make tapping noises if there is a small leak, or a gap if the gasket has a leak, and that would explain it being more noticeable under power.

Or perhaps something ancillary like an aux belt or cam belt tensioner or roller. That would explain the rev-relative and multiple crank rotation "cycle" that the noise has.

Whats the oil pressure like? Suppose starvation/surging over a few crank cycles could make the noise come and go more?
Still, under power the pressure would rise with the revs and so would it get louder? Hmmmm....
