Please heip - Oil leak

I have a 1992 MK2 Golf GTi.
Driving in traffic yesterday and there was a 'clunk' from the drivetrain. Thought nothing of it but then I could smell burning oil. Stopped looked under the car and there was oil dripping from the area near to the gearbox oil drain plug. Got it home and got it on axle stands and took this picture. (oil leak had stopped but it just might have run out of gearbox oil). What looks like a hole has appeared but I can't get a small screwdriver in.
Any ideas? had my diff gone? It still drove fine after the initial 'clunk'.

diff has gone,quite common on golfs,new box i am afrain

Yep Diff has gone, used to do a few like that when I worked for VW/Audi.

Thanks for the replies. Thats what I though and after speaking to a VW specialist he agreed.

Sourced secondhand box from ClubGTi forum with 79K miles for £65 and a local garage will fit it for £130 so back on the road hopefully next Tues.

Thats the good thing about running an older car with a big following, there's always cheap parts to buy.
