Hi all sorry for the long post & thanks in advance for any info.
One of the family runarounds,('96 1800 Escort Ghia well looked after, fsh) has recently developed a worrying clunk. It's not exactly regular, though not exactly intermitent either:confused: The noise seems to be coming from engine bay or under driver. It happens when largish changes in inertia occur, doen't seem to be directly throttle led.
I have spent a few hours under the car checking for anything obvoius & replaced the exhaust & hangers from the cat back-to no avail!
It's been suggested that the CV joint may be failing. The escort CV joints are quite complex, they have both inner & outer CV joints & not really user repairable. So quite an expensive job.
Thanks again chaps:)

Usually you get a rattling/clicking noise from them when cornering more so under load i.e. accelerating on lock out of a junction.
From what you have described I would check the track control arm joints and engine mountings.

The usual method of testing for an OUTER CV joint failure would be to drive the car with the steered wheels on a FULL lock in each direction.
A clicking noise will be heard from the problem joint.

Inner joints are often harder to diagnose, you can usually hear the rumble noise while driving and often feel a vibration through the floor.

What you describe doesn't sound much like either, so have a good look at the rear mountng on the gearbox as they were prone to failure.

I once had a clio which sometimes made a 'clunk' if you pulled away swiftly or braked sharply. An engine mount had failed and the engine was rocking back and forward making the 'clunk.'

I might be barking up the wrong tree but its worth giving the engine a good shove by hand to see if there's excessive movement.

Hope you sort it.

Check the front suspension bushes. The rubber perishes over time, and allows movement.

About the right age for this type of fault. Shoudn't be too pricey to fix on an escort.

Thanks all for the replies.
I did forget to mention that under hard acceleration I'm getting some vibration & loss of power.I'm feeling it through the pedal/floorpan, not, the steering wheel.
I also thought it may be an engine mounting, as yet not been able to find a loose/worn one though.
Also tried Nighthawk's suggestion (hard lock-full circles) apart from some odd stares-was in Tesco's car park! I couldn't detect anything.
I'm dead sure it's something quite simple/obvious, just a question of tracking it down.
Please keep the suggestions coming.

Thanks again
Matt

My vote goes for engine and gearbox mounts.
