2nd gear, revs to 4k and accelerates picks up speed well then feels like it's hitting a limiter afterwards so won't go to 6k limit but continues to accelerate.

Clutch slip?

Clutch slip is easier to determine in a higher gear.

Try 4th or 5th gear, about 3500-4000rpm (likely to be somewhere near peak torque on a small engine) and apply full throttle. If the engine revs quickly rise towards the red line before the car gains speed, that is the clutch slipping.

Other symptoms include a very high biting-point on the clutch pedal, and possibly the clutch becoming much heavier to depress.

Aygo... (also C1 and 107) ...have cable clutches that almost everyone forgets to adjust. If the biting point is high, slacken the cable off so that there's a bit of free play, you might just be in time to save the clutch if it's not gone too far.

Doesn't sound like clutch slip from your description as you state the engine won't rev to 6k. If the clutch was slipping the engine would rev to the redline without the car accelerating in proportion.

Correct.

Clutch slip is the revs increasing with no corresponding increase in speed.
