Am I likley to to be OK cleaning the mating surfaces and using copious quantities of paste on said surfaces, or should I go and get gaskets? (It's the two joints around the cat if it makes a difference)

Cheers

Air leaks in that area are bad news, so your well advised to use a seal/gasket of some kind.

Does the cat have a flat surface to the flange or is it the rolled type or push over type?

If it's the flat type, a new gasket and a thin smear of gasket paste will do the job.

If it's the rolled or pushed over type of joint, then make sure it's free from any loose crud and apply a liberal smear of paste to the surfaces and wipe off the excess after you've fitted them together.

Try and avoid too much though, you don't want a dollop of it rattling round inside the cat

Yeah its the flat flange (oo-er missus). Currently in pieces in my garage. Will use gaskets.

It's stainless but was leaking badly at both places, (and the back joint, and the flex-pipe...) and idling like a bag of crap so I'm hoping this will improve matters!
