I've got a whiney metallic noise coming from somewhere around the aux belt on my Honda 2.2 CDTI.
No noise at idle, only starts when revs get to about 2000rpm. Struggling to identify where it is coming from, what's the best way?
Could be alternator, poser steering pump, Aircon pump, tensioner, or the belt itself.

WD40 is good at stopping belt noise. If it does, that excludes the others.

I have always preferred a hand-sprayer with just water in to highlight which idler/bearing etc it is just in case WD40 or similar has an effect on the belt itself.

For that kind of noise remove the belt and spin/rotate the idlers and aux drives

Spraying the belt had no effect, so i took it off and spun the various pulleys by hand. All felt smooth with no notchyness.
Then I put the belt back on and tried the ol' screwdriver stethoscope but it is still indefinite. Sounds like it might be the power steering pump, but there is no change to the noise when i wiggle the steering, which apparently there would be.

Can you take a vid of the noise in question?

If it's the noise i'm thinking of, this is completely normal for the Honda 2.2 CDTi engine, even when brand new. Having had that lump in both a 2005 CRV and 2008 Accord, they both 'screamed' as the revs rose and both covered 00's thousands of miles without any mechanical failure.

In fact, I can tell by ear when a 2.2 CDTi equipped vehicle is approaching me without even turning my head....sad but true, but just a reflection of just how specific/unique that noise is to that lump.

Pas pumps are fairly noisy anyway.

Well, the cause became very apparent last night when the alternator threw a wobbly and pretty much started to fry the battery.

New alternator and battery to be fitted this afternoon.

Aaaand that has cured the noise problem, but after driving the car all week the battery has died suddenly.

Partner drive it to a friend's house, all fine, went to start it 5 mins later and the battery is completely dead. Won't turn over at all. That's less than half an hour from starting perfectly to completely dead.

Just off to rescue her with jump leads. Any ideas what to check when I get there?

Cars not charging the battery. New alternator and new battery, but not working properly.
Seems this car is doomed

Well either the installation didn't go to plan or one is defective.
