CANEMS ECU Issues

Hi

I’m in the middle of building a buggy and I’ve used a Yaris 1nz-fe engine. I now regret this for many reasons but I have persevered and probably beyond the point of no return.

This journey has led me to an aftermarket ECU. I’m using a 2nd hand CANEMS ECU because the OEM one was immobilised. The CANEMS ECU was easy to fit and looks just what I want/need. All the sensors/data seems to show up in the software and all was looking good until…no spark.

The trouble is that the vehicle it was on previously had a 60-2 crankshaft trigger wheel. My engine has a 36-2 and to change this I need a firmware update.

The user manual implies contact with CANEMS is a simple matter and if a firmware upgrade is needed then this would be easily obtainable. I read this before purchasing so felt safe in the knowledge that I could get support for my project.

Since this I’ve tried to contact CANEMS three times over a four week period. No luck. No phone number, no email reply. So I’m now just waiting hopelessly. It is the holiday period to be fair but I’m concerned and I’m not confident I’ll ever get a reply.

Other resellers (Eg David Lloyd) can do lots with these ECUS but have advised me that firmware isn’t one of the things they can do.

Although a slim chance I’m wondering if anyone has a copy of 36 tooth firmware. Alternatively a way of contacting CANEMS would be useful.

Alternatively, for me, its either:

1. an externally mounted 60-2 trigger wheel and sensor
2. a different ECU (from a provider that has after sales support)
3. or finally admit the 1nz was a bad choice and take it as a sign to find a different motor

Any experiences to share?

Thanks

Krikkit

Have you tried their facebook page? I'd try contacting the list on their "Dealers" page and see if you can get a contact number

I think you'll struggle to get this running on CANEMS as 1NZ has a three tooth cam trigger patten and you'll need cam position to get the VVT working.... which you'll want as it's a lot of lost power without it (if memory serves it's 58 degrees of range on the cam phaser).

Changing the trigger patten is also a pain as it's behind the timing chain. You could make a 60-2 up though to fit on the front pulley or machine a new flywheel with that pattern..... but then you'll still not have a cam trigger pattern that's a go'er so no VVT.

I think Haltech support these by default and if yours isn't a DBW one then the little 550 ECU will likely do the trick, with the added benefit that cam and crank are entirely software configurable so it'll work on anything else in the future too!

There are lots of very bad ecu's out there....yet still seem fairly widely used.

Nothing I've ever seen about CANEMS would ever inspire to to want to use one. If you're having difficulties now....will you expect support to be any better when it's integrated into your vehicle ?

Support matters.

Indeed - and someone with a rolling road reasonably local that knows the ecu.
