We have an alfa mito, last night i noticed a loud grumble when reversing up a slight incline.
There is no clutch slipping so far as i can tell, i guess its the dual mass flywheel starting to fail.

Any clues on whether this might become a terminal problem very quickly or will it grumble on for a bit. With typical bad timing my lad is supposed to be heading on on scottish road trip later on today….

What about when in forwards gear at the same speed etc?

No idea why you would come to such a conclusion.

And as BMW says...does it do same in 1st ?

DmF failing is usually a clatter at tickover in neutral. Once you press the clutch pedal it applies pressure and the clatter, or chatter stops.

Thus sounds like it might just be transmission noise. I wouldn't worry about it.

I am just off to test it again, i there was some vibration on a hillstart apparently a few days ago the lad put it down to unfamiliarity with the car as he hasnt driven it much

There has been a funny noise on start up that doesnt sound like a belt for a while

DmF will be a clear 'chatter' all the time in neutral.

This sounds like transmission whine.

Hence my asking the question above, diff would be my first thought if it is also in fwd gears, reverse gear if it isn't.

Some MiTo used the GM/Getrag M32 box which have a certain notoriety.. change oil and overfill slightly perhaps? I think should be 3.2litres some put in 3.5 and/or a good additive.

Thanks all,

i was a passenger last night when the lad was driving. So not sure if there was some operator error. I have been out for a bit of a test. Reversing up an incline does create some grumbling transmission noise, its less noisy in first on an incline. Everything else seems fine to me.

So i guess dmf is ok, clutch seems ok too

reverse on alot of cars is often not as well engineered as the forward gears, sometimes just an idler gear, As its not used as much.

That could be due to engine mounts or suspension bushes flexing when loaded in that direction. It could also be a problem within the gearbox itself (reverse involves hardware which isn't used for the forward gears) but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion.

If it was a clutch problem I'd expect it to affect forward and reverse equally.
