Hi guys

Id like some advice on a issue

The car (not my car) has not been serviced and the oil level was extremely low
It was continually used until it failed to run

Halfords have said it needs a new engine
Which is extremely expensive

Im looking for a cheaper option as the car still has outstanding finance attached

If it has been run with oil level low enough to damage the engine then I don’t what else you expect. A replacement engine is probably the best way forward. The damaged engine could be stripped down and rebuilt with new bearings etc but that would still mean removing the engine and it also incur a large labour cost.

Hi mate

I know the engine needs replacing

What i was getting at is would it be best paying the high price with a long warranty
Or maybe try i independent garage with a lesser cost and lesser

Just after some advice going forward thats all

Halfords sell car parts.....what have they done to say it needs a new engine ? Presumably someone drove it to and from this place ?

But if it has been driven with no oil, to the point of stopping, it would have been making many many noises and potentially yes will be scrap.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Cheaper option ?

Buy something very cheap that you can afford to run and maintain. And learn a lesson while you pay the finance off.

Because if you, or whoever has f**ked the engine in this manner, a lesson may be a good thing, because no repair or engine swap will be cheap.
Oil on the other hand, servicing, is pretty cheap

The car was taken to a branch in stockport
And they have said it will need a new engine
I also thought this myself when I checked the oil level

I was only after advice because i have had independent garages quote on a new engine

I am asking users their opinions if they was in this situation
There is a massive cost difference from Halfords’s and others but the lagers cost carriers a longer warranty

It’s not about playing stupid games
Shes made a mistake and she will learn

The thing is, all everyone is trying to tell you in a roundabout way is that there is only one person that can make that decision.

Do they want a long warranty? - Pay Mercedes for a new engine. - Large bill - Can they afford it?

Are they happy with a warranty at all? - Pay an independent for a 2nd hand engine - Medium bill - More affordable.

Horses - Courses.

Sadly there is no cheap option, I would have an independent fit a second hand engine and punt the car soon after. It wouldn't even cross my mind to let Halfords replace an engine, if that was one of the options you are proposing.

Pay a proper garage for inspection & diagnosis before spending thousands.

Fully understand who the final decision lies with

Halfords have the car now and have looked and quoted

Getting an independent to look and cost was my views but its not my car to make that call

It’s obvious its wont be a cheap solution but there is a massive difference from 6k to 3k
Which also questions the quality of the replacement

Selling after the repair would happen because selling was her option before this happened

Appreciate any opinions given

I had to get an Engine replaced in a Nissan Xtrail when it seized up, not through lack of oil but it still happened at 36000 miles.
Was only a few months out of warranty but because i serviced it myself just before warranty expired i didnt have a leg to stand on, Nissan wouldnt help.
Nissan wanted £7k to do the work but i found a small independent who specialised in the Renault lumps and they did it for £4k, we got rid of it a few days later.
Was absolutely gutted to be honest.
Not much help to you i know but sometimes you just have to get on with it and suck it up.
i wouldnt let halfords loose on it personally unless they can give you a cast iron warranty, even then id tread very carefully.

Merc specialist, not a parts store for proper diagnosis and advice.

I've known engines run low on oil to go on for many years once some fresh oil and filters go in, all may not be lost unless its already seized solid and having to be trailered about.

I wouldn't let Halfords change a bulb, let alone diagnose anything wrong with an engine.

You're offering little real info, despite being asked for more detail.

And you mention numbers of 6k to 3k...so have you had multiple quotes ? multiple diagnosis ? or are these just numbers you've plucked from thin air ?
Was the vehicle transported to all these places for diagnosis ? or does it still drive ?

Whatever you do, whoever you go to...make sure they are reputable, speak to customers of theirs etc etc, get proper feedback unless you 100% trust them
Far too many stories like this, go very very pear shaped.

And even a used engine can fail....so find out what any seller will cover under warranty with their work, and what exactly is included with any engine, as it may be just a bare engine expecting to use your bolt on parts.
But as some of these too may be damaged ( again, you give zero info as to what damage there is ), you may well want any replacement engine to be as complete as possible.

Nor do you state age of vehicle to see how readily engines will be available for it

A brief search online, suggests a second hand engine might be 4-5k alone....which could easily see a repair 6, 7, 8k
