2005 Porsche 911 (997) with 123k on the clock.

Noticed today while in traffic there is a slight grumbling noise when depressing the clutch halfway (not present when the clutch is fully depressed or fully out.) I can only presume the noise is coming from worn pressure plates rather than the release bearing. 1st gear is also the tiniest, tiniest bit stiffer (granted this could be due to anything.)

The clutch feels great, it is light, does not slip at all, no burning noises or smells whatsoever, car does still drive superb and unless you're in traffic you can't even notice it.

I was due to go on a 1500 mile round trip in it with my family next week - based on probabilities, am I safe to go on this trip without worrying too much about the clutch failing?

Yes, I know I am asking people to predict the impossible and pretty much anything could go at any time, but this trip is really important. Is it likely for clutches to just "go" with no signs of slipping? Am I overworrying?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Of you have breakdown insurance why not?

The only down side to that is if it does let go whilst you are away, you could have a lengthy wait for repair, and will more than likely be an expensive repair.

Personally, insurance or not, I wouldn’t!

I’d want to get it inspected before going on a trip and then make a decision how long it’s likely to last depending on what’s wrong.

I’d say it also depends on where you’re going

And on whether you have an expert who is likely to know what is causing the noise.
Many years ago in the same position I took expert advice on a noise- advice was 'no problem'; next day, stuck in 4th gear at 11pm in the middle of nowhere in Wales.

Thank you for all the advice everyone. All really good points. I've decided it's not worth the risk/

I'm going to get the clutch inspected and replaced along with the other usual bits and if it's ready in time I'll take it, if not I'll hire a boring car frown Better safe than sorry though.

Thanks again

Haha

I have a love-hate relationship with it… it drives superb and revving it out in 2nd when joining the motorway makes my commute a bit more bearable

On the other hand it scrapes on bumps super easily… it’s also not unreliable, but it’s not reliable enough to ‘rely’ on. Clutch issue classic example (one week away from a huge trip!) couple of months back it was the water pump whilst I was up in Devon… then the heaters stuck on hot on full two months ago
