I'm replacing head gasket on a 1946 Sunbeam Talbot 10. (1185cc side valve). Taken 7 hours to lift head but thankfully nothing broke, the original studs are not in the best shape and wish to replace.

Studs are BSF and selection of lengths, does anyone know is EN16T is a suitable material in this instance?

Thanks

Can't comment on specifics...but I'd think given the very modest application, even a 8.8 and certainly 10.9 grade would be more than ample unless they're tiny.

Would it be sacrilege to drill/tap/helicoil to a fastener easily sourced ?

Quick google suggest BSF studs are available.
If the threads they go into are in good condition stick with what's on it.

Thanks, sadly the threads aren't the best. Could clean up but for sake of new studs would prefer to replace.

Really don't fancy converting to bolts.

I can't obtain a full set of OEM, so a mixture of old and new or replace the lot machined from EN16T.

New valves were off the shellf. cloud9

He meant the threads that the studs screw into.

a decent engineering shop should be able to hardness test the old studs, just go from there, i would imagine the tourque isnt that high, so most modern steel should be ok.

EN16T would be fine.
Absolute worst case it's going to be grade 8,8 equivalent
