I was driving the Xc60 yesterday and it managed to break down in the middle lane of the M6. "Fortunately" it was in stop-start traffic and I managed to edge it over to the hard shoulder.

There was a bit of a bang (and initially i thought the guy behind me had hit me). The car lost almost all forward drive. It was edging forward and every couple of feet there would be a little jump, as if I'd driven over something in the road. To try and explain it another way it reminded me of the time when the driveshaft snapped on my Rover 414, regardless of the engine revs there was only slowly edging forward. The only warning light at this point was the traction control light which was blinking away furiously.

I got onto the hard shoulder and called the AA (jesus their automated call system is annoying) and they said they should be out in 2 to 3 hours. Whilst waiting I switched it off and on a few times and found that reverse gear was working fine. After about 10 minutes forward gears started working fine as well, but the ABS, TPMS, and traction control lights were all illuminated (which suggests one of the sensors is knackered).

The two things I can't figure out are

1. What was the initial bang / thud?
2. Why did the car lose almsot all forward drive? Was this the traction control? the car's AWD so I would have expected SOME forwards motion....

Ill be taking it to my feindly mechanic on Tuesday but was just wondering if any mechanically inclined PHers could shed some light......

I would suspect you've broken off one or more teeth in either the diff or gearbox. A failure in the diff would probably affect all forward and reverse gears, so if it only affects specific gears that points to a possible gearbox problem.

It's an unusual type of failure that you'd normally only expect after abuse or an astronomical mileage, but if something has lost lubrication I suppose it might happen sooner.

Surely if it was one of the teeth then it wouldn't appear to self repair? I drove it back from Birmingham to Manchester (110 miles) and it "seemed" fine, although to be fair i didn't risk putting it in either Sport or manual mode

AIUI the Volvo AWD means it's FWD most of the time unless it detects slippage, at which point it sends power to the rear wheels. I've no idea of this was still working as it was a dry day. there were no error messages on the display.

Auto.

My guess is that is where the problem will be.

You may well be right. I'm hoping that, as it managed to fix itself, the issue won't be too expensive to repair frown

My usual mechanic has diagnosed an issue with the "Torque Converter Solenoid". Unfortunately he doesn't work on auto boxes and has recommended a gearbox specialist.

Anybody know how much a TCS replacement is likely to cost ?

Looking at £800 in case anybody was curious biggrin

So it looks like the TCCS stuck in "Closed" position, which meant that the Toque Convertor wasn't connecting to the engine, which meant it felt like it was in neutral. The error code was P0744 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Intermittent - "intermittent" being the operative word as the issue hasn't repeated itself. I'm now wondering whether to

Carry on driving and hope it doesn't recur
Have the transmission fluid changed and see if that fixes things (will be a lot cheaper and it may have been gunky auto fluid which gummed up the TCCS)
Get it rreplaced just to be on the safe side

It's turning out to be an expensive month frown

If it were me (which it wouldn't be as I don't do automatics) I would go for fluid change, reset & see what happens.
