AX GT/GTi Gearboxes?

I'm currently driving a AX GT (1990), however I get a fairly loud knocking sound under acceleration around left hand turns. I presumed it was the CV joint, which I replaced (French design means new driveshaft). Unfortunately the knocking sound persists.

I'm told that the gearbox is at fault - could anyone explain to me how? (The mechanic who diagnosed the fault is a friend of work collegue, he's trustworthy, but he's away for a couple of weeks.)

Also does anybody know if AX GT and GTi gearboxes are the same?

TBH i dont know how much help i can be - but as no one else has posted....
i had the same vibration/knocking from the front left corner and changed the driveshaft to no avail. in the end it WAS my box that was screwed but i didnt care - a gearbox that whines and knocks but still works is ok in my book! in the end it was jumping out of gear and all sorts when i sold it. in answer to your question about the interchangeability of the boxes. IIRC you CAN use the GTi box on the GT - but for gods sake check that before you buy one! its been a few years since i got rid of it and i may be remembering the wrong information.
Ax gts are pretty nippy cars - i still remember mine fairly fondly - but its interesting that the only cars ive had gbox issues with are french. coincidence?

Cheers Paolow - Having dug a bit deeper i've managed to locate a few GT boxes, generally they're between £50 and £70, which seems quite reasonable.

It doesnt sound like a gearbox problem to me, i thought that the cv joints on the ax were complete with the shaft..Did you fit new or second hand? because it does sound like a cv joint/shaft.IMHO

Can't add much but my AX GTi suffered from a horrible knocking noise which only appeared under light throttle or on the overrun, put your foot down and it would clear up. Problem was the gearbox (though driveshafts didn't last long in it either).
