LPG Conversion
Discussion
We're currently running a BMW 728 Sport (2000) & it's a cracking car. But with fuel prices going the way they are, running it is starting to get expensive, so I'm thinking about converting it to LPG.
BMW are recommending that we don't, as they don't/can't deal with it. But as LPG currently costs half what petrol does, converting the car will cut our fuel bill in half.
Has anyone converted a car recently, or should I just stay well clear & hope the up & doming fuel protests will bring the price down to a more sensible rate ?
Any ideas appreciated!

First you'll have to find the £1500-£2000 it will cost to get the conversion done, then pay the insurance company any increase they might want for 'modifying' your vehicle.
While LPG might be half the price, this does not mean your fuel bill will also be cut in half as LPG does not produce the same energy as petrol so you will be getting less power and less miles per 'gallon'.
Overall you will find the actual cost is about 75% of that of petrol, before you factor in the price of the conversion.
If you do 12,000 miles a year at 30mpg then it will take you almost two years to pay off the cost of the conversion and there is no guarantee that 'Two Jags' will not put the same duty onto LPG/CNG in the near future.

Where do you live? Depending on your location, lpg ranges from approx 28p to 40p a litre. I've heard that the calorific value (energy output)of lpg is 80-85% of that of petrol. If you achieve 20 mpg at present and using the above figures with the price of a litre of petrol at 95p you can expect to get the equivalent of 37-56mpg with lpg.
These guys here have previously converted a BMW 728.

Why not check out the BMW and LPG forums for further information.

I spoke to BMW this morning & they recomend against it.... SO together with the comments on here, I think it's probably a no go (although we did 25,000miles in it last year, which would pay for it)....
Don't really want to sell the car thoguh, as it's so good at the job it does (destroys motorway miles)....
Oh well, mnight have to add ANOTHER car to the fleet (TDi GOlf?)!
Thanks for the comments !

Well, with the money you've spent on your Cerb recently, it is cheaper for me to buy another car rather than use the ones I have (if my cars were like yours) !!!
Your cars are like mine!
I sold the Golf by the way (for 400 quid more than I paid for it ) and bought a beemer...
