Morning all. Another clutch replacement thread.

Mothers car has a definite clutch slip. She's owned it for about 10k and the car itself has done 38k now. This to me screams of premature clutch wear but I know the previous owner had very little mechanical sympathy.

She's been quoted £780ish for the clutch replacement. Cost is high due to Clutch being out of stock in most locations and has to be purchased from Suzuki themselves due to complicated model numbers she's been told. I've seen that you can get a LUK clutch kit delivered from ECP (£150) and there seems very little differences in the Celerio line up (one engine across Model years) so it's made me question the pricing of the replacement?

I personally only had about 5 hours max labour for a small engined FWD Transverse 3 cylinder engine clutch replacement (with manual cable adjustment).

By my fag packet maths I got to approx pricing £550.

Am I out of touch with figures or is a full days labour right for what seems like a bread and butter car?

Edit - the previous price was from my preferred choice Indy that I sent her to. I've just had a quote of £700 from Suzuki.

Maybe a bit ott but it all depends what you can get the clutch kit for really.

Check out the cost of trans oil... depending on the spec it may be Suzuki only, with some manufacturers gear oils now £20+/litre, that can add £50 or so. Hub nuts too (if they're staked) can be up to £10+ each.

Years ago now, but eldest's Megane 225 needed a new clutch.
LUK listed one, but all enquiries to get one came to nothing.
Turned out they listed it but hadn't actually got round to stocking them.
Leaving Renault dealer as the only option.

You could try ringing a few local garages on your mother's behalf & seeing how many will be prepared to do the work if you supply the clutch.
Think you might be unpleasantly surprised with the answer.
Also try ringing one of the 'clutch specialists' such as Mr Clutch & see what they offer price wise.

ETA just seen the edit & if Suzuki will do it for less than the indy likely the only way you'll get it done cheaper is if you DIY it.

Cheers all. It does seem like I was out of touch with my pricing estimate. I just struggled with such a basic car (mechanically) costing so much at an Indy however the competitiveness of Suzuki has pushed me to suggest going to the dealer.

For reference another indy garage got back to me and £710 was total cost. 4 hours labour at £432 (with VAT), £278 was parts.

Not obscene, most garages are £100 an hour labour these days.

sounds like a good idea, plus it'll most likely be a genuine part, and you'll get a kind of warranty on the labour and parts if they fail , if nothing else (although not 100% sure about clutches).

From what I gather, Suzuki & Hyundai are pretty reasonable with their servicing and repair costs actually, but I expect that depends largely on the dealership as well.
