Hi fellow PHers.

I have a 2013 scirocco 1.4 tsi which is auto and currently dead.

The crankshaft pulley fully detached itself and caused an issue with the timing- so I'm told. I was driving through a junction from still and at about 8mph it detached and I lost power. Hopefully as I was relatively slow and light on the pedal the damage won't be too bad, but with it not starting it's best to assume the worse.

There is no top end compression and this I'm told means I've done damage to my engine which is likely terminal. Specifically the part on the other side of the crankshaft pulley and timing.

I've sat on it for now not knowing what to do.

I can't find anything online relating to a replacement engine, as it has the supposedly better CTHD engine... The only one I can find is £2.5k from Germany. I've called a couple of rebuilders but they don't seem too interested.

Does anyone know whether I could fit a 2.0 engine in, or if any other cars in the VW groups engines may be compatible, such as from an A1, Polo, Golf or Skoda? That should open more options and could help find a replacement engine.

I'm based in Greater Manchester, if anyone has any reputable garages or mechanics who could rebuild mine.

I hope there are people more knowledgeable than me that can help and look forward to any advice.

I know Mike at Wigan Tuning has rebuilt a dead one previously, worth a call. If not, try Wigan VAG Parts. They might have a spare engine knocking about.

I'll give him a call tomorrow morning, likewise the parts to see if they have an engine as it'll be worth weighing up prices anyhow!

Engine swaps are never easy on modern cars. Anyone who says 'just engine swap it' has never tried to swap an engine in anything remotely modern.

I know a guy who swapped a 1.9 PD100 for a 1.9 PD130 and amongst other things it was a whole new wiring loom, despite being the 'same' engine. Then there's the stupid crap like at that point in a VAG product your radio might not work if it's coded to the loom...

Unless you really know what you are doing, I wouldn't.

I don't, but hope the garage would.

By this do you mean swapping for a different type of engine, or even if its a 'like-for-like'?

I get the radio could need recoding but I'd assume that wouldn't be too detrimental seeing as though I planned on fitting a carplay enabled unit before it broke!

If this is your daily driver etc etc.....just find a like for like identical engine.

Or just have your own repaired.

Trying to do a swap will just be a world of hurt.

On the DSG bit, I think the one in the 1.4 will be dry-clutch which iirc could take about 180lbsft of torque, whereas the one on the 2.0TSI was a wet-clutch as the engine produces more than 200lbsft. Also, at that age, I think the wet-clutch was a 6 speeder, whereas the dry-clutch was a 7.

Just to close this down, due to getting my EV I didn't see the value in repairing. It should have been repairable, and the engine swap idea gathered little momentum as most garages only want to be doing like-for-like repairs - bolt off bolt on, so an engine swap was too much work when they can have many other cars for basic suspension work paying £100 a go versus my car taking garage space for a few weeks...

There is a guy on youtube doing an R32 engine swap for a scirocco, if I had the garage space I'd love to have done some kind of conversion.

probably sensible outcome.

Although there seem to be dozens of 1.4 tsi engines on ebay.,

There are but most are manual and the older version. The 2013 has the CTH engine code which was revised due to common problems with engines failing - though didn't prevent mine from going! I think the only working CTH engine I found was from Germany and quite expensive!

The mechanical engine doesn't care what box is fitted
