Morning all, the mechanic I take me cars to has found a lot of soot over the back of the engine (2.2 civic). Don't know where it's come from and can't smell fumes in or out of the car.

He seems to think it might be an MOT failure. Is it? Anyone else had this issue and it's passed or failed it's MOT?

Several MOT testers answer questions on this thread therefore you might want to post your question there.

Well as soot can only be coming from part of the exhaust system then It should be easy to find & yes, a leaking exhaust is likely to fail an MOT.

Could be part of the EGR system leaking, as long as it doesn't effect the emission at the tail pipe I think it wouldn't come into the m.o,t test.

This is what I thought. If he can't tell where it's coming from then we will just clean it down and fingers crossed.

It will as soon as they lift the bonnet & see/hear/smell the leak.
