I'm in need of some HELP!

I got my m235i onto a lift for the first time after purchasing it, and noticed the tranmission pan was covered in oil as shown in the picture.

My initial reaction was that it was from the transmission sump, and as it was hitting the 50k marker is was time to do a transmission oil change anyway, so had the oil/pan etc changed thinking it would sort itself out. 6 months later, I got a look under the car, and it's almost identical to how it previously looked, with the sump pan covered in oil.

Any ideas what it could be what else it could be?

If it isn't coming from the sump, it could be coming from the input or output shaft seals, or the rear crankshaft seal on the engine, or anywhere else that is dripping down to the bottom of the 'box. It could even be a dipstick tube leaking, weeping oil line connection and so on. To find the source you really need to work upwards until you have found the highest place that is oil - that's your source.

I'm getting a few comments on bmw forums about it being rear crank seal. Hopefully whatever it is, it's not a costly issue!

It likely will not be cheap as the g/box will have to come off, as will the clutch & flywheel, so while in there the norm would be to change both also.

It’s an auto.

Just box off then, have you had the under trays off and had a look to see if it's coming from anywhere else on the engine?

Would be worth cleaning everything with degreaser and checking it within a couple of weeks to see if you can find it

Yes, it would be worth it.
