My Mum just bought a 2018 Mini Cooper 1.5 and while it was still under warranty the drive belt snapped.

I pointed out it happens, but I wanted to know why, there is always reason that’s causes the belt to fail.

Well, it went back and they found the A/C compressor to be seized solid. They replaced it under warranty and gave her the old one so I could have a look.

The swash plate has destroyed itself some how and all the half bearings have come out.

I'd say that there wasn't much PAG oil in it and maybe too high pressure. Rather lucky it didn't explode and take out more engine bay parts.

There was plenty of oil in it, certainly made a mess when I took it apart. The pressure is an interesting theory though, thank you.

The compressor in my Suzuki Swift Sport grenaded itself at about 50k miles. Have no idea why, the AC was working perfectly right up until it wasn't.

That’s exactly what happened here, 29 C day, air con working apparently fine, then bang, aux belt exits stage left…

I had a brand new Saab 9/3 turbo. 24 hours into ownership the A/C compressor seized solid, dumping the belt. Happily this happened close to home. Dealer recovered the car on a trailer, fitted a new compressor and the car went on to live a long, reliable life.

Sometimes these things just happen.

Once came back from a two week holiday and my OH's Aygo wouldn't start. Tried to bump start it down a hill and upon lifting the clutch with it in 2nd the front wheels just locked. I started to wonder if the engine had somehow seized while we were away? It was recovered and turned out the alternator had seized solid, can't believe it didn't snap a belt when I tried to bump it...
