All, this morning the missus tried to start her Civic (1.6 Auto, ‘99/‘00 I think). Cranked a few times then stopped. Engine didn’t fire. Now when the key is turned, the usual warning lights come on, but no cranking at all, not even a click.

Tried charging the battery a bit, no difference (Genuine Honda battery only a couple of years old - green light on).

Put headlights on and turned they key to crank - headlights don’t dim. All other electrics seem to work.

No issues previously apart from new alternator last year. No recent issues. Very reliable.

Called RAC, but had to cancel due to insane waiting time and impending hospital appointment. I’ll have to re-book later.

In the meantime - starter solenoid? What do you think?

Thanks.

Bad earth between battery and engine?

Try connecting a jump lead between the negative terminal and engine block and trying again.

Similarly check connections to positive terminal.

Check to see if the starter solenoid is getting power when the key is turned to crank.

Pointless faffing about at anything else til you know that

Somebody needs to do some basic fault diagnosis.

If that's you, you probably already know roughly what you need to do.

If it isn't you then you need to figure out who it's going to be, and it's probably a bad idea for you to start speculating about the problem.

Maybe the switch attached to the ignition lock has come loose or is shot. I had this on my 02 are, had to get a new switch to put on the back of the ignition barrel lock.
