Zf8 oil change mistake
Discussion
Don't shoot me down for this, but I've made an error whilst doing a DIY transmission oil change on my m235i with the zf8 gearbox.
Basically after emptying the transmission and changing the pan, I did the first fill.
Then I started the car, ran it through the gears, and proceeded to do a second fill.
Now is where I made the mistake, what I SHOULD have done was wait for temps to reach 30-40°c, and do third fill, but I COMPLETELY forgot .
I only remember after I'd packed everything away, given myself a pat on the back, and realised what I'd done.
I take I shouldn't drive the car until I've had the oil level checked?
Thanks

I wouldn't drive it, but I see no harm in continuing the procedure again by getting he transmission back up to temp.
I can't remember exactly what that was as it was some time since I last did it.
However it isn't too difficult with a scantool to keep an eye on the temp as recorded by the cars diagnostics. With that it's easy enough.
The only other important item for me was using ZF's recommended trans oil. It's expensive but at least you know it's done right.

I might be missing something here but 30-40°c isn't particularly hot - indeed it's just around body temperature - and so surely isn't significantly different in terms of oil behaviour and expansion at whatever ambient temperature you did it at? Might it be a more relevant and significant instruction for those undertaking the job in the middle of a Siberian winter?

Plus if it was to do with expansion, you'd expect some fluid to come out rather than have to add fluid. Maybe a valve opens to a cooler or something? I don't know.Just carry out the 2nd part again level surface run through the gears get to approx oil temp (i'll come back the this bit) remove filler let bleed excess off or fill till it does refit bung and drive, the temp is not critical IME inc VAG DSG boxes give or take 10/15 degrees (nearer recommended figure is best however) using scanner data or a thermal gun on the sump is easy enough in your case , reset trans adaptions if available on your diagnostic scanner and enjoy
