I have a 2004 2litre Tdi Peugeot boxer based motorhome and we are currently in Sweden heading home to the UK.
Engine has started what I can only describe as pinking or preignition under load. It gets quite loud when put under larger load i.e. hills, and power is noticeably down.
Sounds normal on tickover and no smoke or anything. Temp is normal.
Any suggestions? I know that preignition isn't something you'd expect from a diesel but that's the only way I can describe it.

pre-ignition is pretty much how diesel works, as there is no source of actual ignition so to speak.

Could you have put some dodgy fuel in it ? Could be an injector issue ?

No fuel leaks anywhere that it might be drawing some air in ?

Funnily enough, since I composed the post I have almost run the rank dry and refuelled a full tank. It's a whole lot better so I suspected fuel too. But who sells dodgy fuel??

Well I doubt Sweden has republican terrorists, but here in Northern Ireland, they still launder fuel like fk and sell it on as white if you're in the wrong part of the country and happen upon a dodgy filling station.

Probably not quite as common as it once was, but still a big enough problem
