My 530 petrol auto (f10) is running rough. More on that below but…

About 2 months ago the transmission warning light came on and the engine was running really rough. There was also a very small cheaping noise from under the bonnet. Belts??Took it to a leading Indy. Couldn’t really find much wrong once codes were cleared. They kept it another week and drove it. Changed all the injectors plugs and necessaries. It was a big bill. To be fair to them they said they could not be sure that this was a cure.

Anyway, got it back it was running very sweetly. Very happy.

About a week after that my missus rings and complains that it is running funny. Lumpy and sort of juddering on. Then used it for a few weeks, seemed fine.

Well today I drove it. Say 50 miles mix of urban, nose to tail m25 and free flowing stuff.

On the way there, when stopping in traffic the engine would get very lumpy. To the extent the car would shake. Made no real difference to put it in neutral or park. Didn’t happen every stop and engine seemed sweet again once pulled away.

Got to my destination and it was mega lumpy as we pulled up to the ticket checker. It’s as if the car wants to run on …

Drive it home and that feeling of surging forward when braking to a halt… almost as if the clutch not totally disengaging. But stopping fine and then sitting there running lumpy as. Only lumpy when idling.

In the last miles before home there was a regular but intermittent squealing or whistling from under the bonnet. Could be belts. Was quiet but got louder quickly.

Obviously I will get someone with a better idea than me to look at it, but what could it be?

Ideas welcomed. Austin.

You need to get the codes read again really....

Whereabouts are you based?

There are some really good specialists around - the one I use in Essex, BM connected is always getting cars from other garages to fix when they can't.

I will do. The garage it just went to is one of regions leading indies. There are two within 35 miles of here that have done me proud in the past. Essex is a bit of a trek and the car sounds so bad, I’m not sure I’ll drive it anywhere.

While the fault is present, unplug one injector at a time and see if things change.

This should help identify if the problem is one cylinder, or many

n53 engine - misfire is usually injectors need doing - you mention they've been done - were they all new and coded properly?

The squealing could be belts or in my case it was the CCV valve which is built into the cam cover on these. When it finally went it was horrendous, like a screaming belt but it was absolutely piercing, and it ran rough due to the extra air being pulled in via the crank. It was the diaphragm torn. Its possible to replace just the diaphragm. How many miles?

They were all changed for new by a leading Indy specialist. Cost a packet. They’ve done work for me before and been spot on.

75000 miles. 10 years old.

Ah it's not my old one then boxedinbiggrin

I sold mine at 85k

ccv as I said, is worth a check. Pop the top cover off, check for vacuum at the ccv hole, if there is vacuum, you have a ruptured diaphragm and it's letting in unmetered air and run rough. May not be the only cause, but it won't help and can chirp.

Any codes?

I wouldn't do this btw, the piezo injectors use 100v or so to keep closed, iirc, and it may cause issues if one sticks open at 200bar.

True if it is a direct injection..

Equally, should not isolate coils otherwise unburnt fuel can get into the cat.

A decent scan tool may allow shutting down a cylinder at a time for testing safely.
