We have a high mileage 2013 V60 D4 R-Design (170k miles) good service history.
It has an intermittent turbo issue where it will not boost at all for anywhere between 30 seconds and probably a few minutes, then the turbo kicks back in as if nothing happened.
This happens almost exclusively at higher speeds on long runs, but has started to happen occasionally at lower speeds (but very rarely).

When it last had a service, the garage plugged it in and said it had various codes relating to the turbo and expected it needed a new turbo.. they cleared the codes and it still occurred. My issue is, surely if the turbo is the culprit, it would either be working or not? There are no weird noises from it. It either kicks in, or doesn't.

We are considering cutting our losses as the car isn't worth putting £1000+ for the turbo and it also has some major steering problems under load (that's another story though). But before I get shot of it, just wanted to see if this sounds like anything common/obvious? The car is probably worth about £2k as it has some laquer peel a few scratches.

(The only 'symptom' I've especially noticed is that the turbo whistles slightly more than I'd expect, but that may just be because I'm looking for faults. I've had a turbo fail before and that sounded awful)

Cheers

could be an air leak, or issue with the boost control system more so than the turbo itself.

Or some sort of blockage preventing vacuum getting to the control system etc

Is something like that tricky to find? I'm wondering if it is worth taking back to a garage to specifically look for that sort of issue.

These like splitting turbo hoses, can either be hot or cold side, hot is easier to see, cold can be more difficult, you may even need to take the bumper off as while the pipe is accessible the clip is the wrong way.

Thanks!
We have only had the car for about 2 years. I do know that just before we bought it, the previous owner had one of the turbo pipes changed.

Normally a fine mist of oil being spayed is a give away.

So one to check whilst the engine is running

No, engine off, where they split usually leaves a trail of oil on the hose.
