Have two friends that have built engines using Chinese turbos - both with good results.
Initially they used Chinese journal bearing turbos - GT replicas at around £250, they produced results but started smoking after a few hundred miles of use.
They then opted to go for Chinese ball-bearing turbos at a cost of around £700 - both very happy with them, must have covered around 4000 miles combined so far with no complaints.
It appears the quality has improved in the past decade.

has anyone here used the cheap ebay turbos?
Planning to convert my e36 and can see loads of gtx turbos for £100 or £200 where genuine one is around 1.5k.
seen some mixed reviews of people saying cheap Chinese one work.
Part of me says just get a genuine g30-770 at 1.7k
Really depends what you're after and usage.Planning to convert my e36 and can see loads of gtx turbos for £100 or £200 where genuine one is around 1.5k.

Chinese turbos have come a long way, and there are some pretty decent ones.
At the end of the day they will work. Will they be the best ? will they spool as well as a good turbo ? etc etc....No, of course not.
But will they allow you to make more power ? Yes.
It would do no harm to start with a Chinese, because it would still work for fitting up and fabrication. Then later down the line if you were not happy, upgrading to a proper turbo would be fairly easy.
