2011 e220 estate 220k miles. Timing chain needs replacing. Advised the job could be anything from a few hundred ( to replace the chain itself if pullies are okay) or thousand if they are not and injectors are damaged when repairing.
Question is has anybody just replaced the whole engine? What are the benefits and down sides of this? What sort costs? Any advice greatly received.
Ps any tips on running it with a noisy/loose chain

Massively more work, more spent on parts, and you take on whatever risks are asociated with the replacement engine.

How would the injectors be damaged just changing the chain ?

Can this be done with the engine in situ?

I am probably wrong but I thought the timing chains were at the back of the engine o the W212 requiring engine removal.

Same sort of crap with my Audi....it has a rear timing chain. Hopefully I never have it long enough to need to do it !! lol

Video on YT of some guys in Romania doing it. To be fair they just get on with it, but still a lot of work. But well done video.

Run it until it breaks then scrap it, we had a customer who’s 220 through a rod through the block, he supplied us with a used engine, by the time he was all done it stood him at near enough 4K, it was never a good starting point to begin with and really should have cut his losses.

Injectors have never been an issue that I’m aware of in these

My last E Class used for my business was a 2011 220 CDi which I drove over 318k miles in with no issues, and it is still going strong with it's new owner.

Having watched that video I feel quite lucky.

Bloody modern engines needing replacement timing chains are a farce!

Years ago, timing chains lasted pretty much forever, the worst that would happen is that they would rattle a bit, which meant it was time to change the chain.

This ^ Mazda Nissan Mercedes BMW all trouble free back then, far more robust and often dual chain systems , dont get me started on the likes of the Fiat 1.3ctdi (GM Combo,Fiat 500 etc) for example with chain and sprockets dimensions I wouldn't use on a kids bicycle
