W204 Mercedes c 220cdi OM651 engine rattle
Discussion
Dear all
I bought an automatic C 220cdi with OM 651 engine few months back. It has done 175000 miles and i have done a full service which replaced all fluids and filters.
Replaced all 4 tyres and 4 brake discs and pads.
It had a rattle at every start for 30 seconds and now the Mercedes specialist says it's chain rattle and i must replace it soon. But some do say this engine rattle is normal and does not matter.
The work costs £1000.
Would it be good financial call to do this work as well? Bought at 4000. Already spent 3000 on it, which was full service, tyres and brakes.

I wouldn't spend a penny more on that car. Its almost at the end of its useful life. Id keep it for parts and buy a lower mileage example.
This 2009 220 CDi Sport with 133k miles is up for 3k, so I'm sure that you could agree on £2,900

I'm sorry. It's £2000 not 3000. 2 engine oil change. Gearbox oil + axle oil+ coolant + brake fluid + pads and disc + tyres + remap. Wtf you fitted good plated parts?

That is still a F-load for a car of that value/age/mileage.
Even if done at an indie, once you break that £2k down, it’s not a lot really. Probably £200-250 just for the gearbox oil change for an auto. £400-500 for decent tyres.
Brakes… minimum of £500 for an indie?

Some say this 30 seconds rattle is not an imminent risk. So I'm not sure how this could suddenly turn into engine breakdown.
After those 30 seconds, engine is very smooth and pulls easily till high speeds.
Ask yourself if a new or low mileage engine would do this ? I say no it wouldn't, so it's wear and wear in a timing chain is dangerous. I would change it along with the tensioner and be prepared for additional work in the process, like a crank pulley. After those 30 seconds, engine is very smooth and pulls easily till high speeds.
If the timing chain breaks or becomes loose enough to jump on the sprockets, your engine will be damaged - such damage that might need the head to come off to rectify and that's going to be very expensive to have it done properly.
Everything's a gamble, do you feel lucky, punk ?

Yes indeed it's a gamble. I had less money and i wanted such a car at that price. Till now feeling lucky and I'm trying to get some votes from here to justify the timing chain work. I would be using this car only for another 30k miles till 2024 October.
If it breaks tomorrow morning i would have to spend close to £4k to get it repaired.
If i decide to sell, it won't fetch more than £3.5k. And another low mileage car would want more money, approximately £6k.
If i had some more money it would be a 530d low mileage car which would cost £15k. So for now my car life is struck under £5k.
In my head selling is out of question till next October. Trying to know if this rattle can hold on or is it fully unpredictable?
The sound you're hearing is the chain rattling and lashing against the guide either because the tensioner cannot provide enough oil pressure because it is knackered or the chain has stretched.
It will get worse and start taking large chucks off the guides and throwing cam timing codes.
Worth getting it booked for a tensioner replacement in hope. The garage will also be able to borescope the chain end and check for guide damage and have a decent guess to if the chain has stretched.
If it has, engine out to replace.
