It was last done in 2014 around 97k miles. The car's now done around 157k miles. I'm just wondering if my 2003 VW Golf's cambelt change is overdue? How much should I expect to pay for it from a local garage?

Assuming it's a older pd diesel engine I'm pretty sure it's 80k/4 years. So way overdue on age. Yeah bts do snap but it's normally a tensioner, water pump, guide that will take out the cambelt

It really depends on how much you value the car. Pull the top cambelt cover off and have a look at the belt see if it shows any stress/cracks on it. Depends where you are in the country probably 2/300 quid with decent parts.

If the cars not worth much or you don't care for it that much. Visually inspection and then a game of cambelt roulette.

Just get it done and make sure you pay the extra couple of ££ and get the waterpump done at the same time too (they can come supplied as part of the parts kit).

They're a relatively common and simple job on the MK4 (different engines have different 'gotchas') and depending on how confident you are with spanners, it's even one you could do on the driveway.

As for how much... Belt kits are approx £130 and it'll be a couple of hours labour. Have a chat with your local garage or VAG specialist.
