Milk Float Noise From Engine
Discussion
Any ideas why when accelerating I hear what sounds like a very quiet whining noise from the engine, almost like a milk float ? Doesn't do it idle, only does it when accelerating.
It's always made a similar noise when shifting down into first whilst the revs are high, but recently noticed it does it when driving around too
Yaris 2008
Thanks

Sounds like a worn gearbox not the engine, possibly made worse by changing into 1st gear at high revs...
Could be yeah, not sure as to why only when accelerating ?On a side note, never had my hood up before with the engine running wanted to know if it sounds as it should.. ( unrelated from the milkfloat noise )

What sort of accelerating? In gear and moving? On the drive and rev the engine? If it does it when the car is stationary my first guess would be alternator, second guess belt tensioner and third guess A/C compressor.
Beyond that, gearbox maybe - a bearing complaining when significant torque is applied.

So inside the car, is sort of an electric motor almost sound. If I put the window down it sounds like a slight hissing sound ( when accelerating ) imagine a turbo charger hiss sort of sound but more mellow. Maybe it's the turbo charger

I did wonder! On one of my cars there's a very faint whistle when the turbo kicks in at low speed. I know it's the turbo because,In Comfort mode you don't hear it, but
In Sport mode the turbo kicks in at lower rpm and you hear the whistle rise and then subside.
If your car has a Sport button (or whatever) you could give this a try!
