Hi All,

I’m thinking of buying an old 4x4 which has a 4 inch straight pipe. I’d like to put a normal exhaust on it as I live in a quiet neighbourhood and also to appease the wife. Roughly how much does it cost? It’s an old Nissan patrol so I doubt there are off the shelf exhausts available.
Also is it an MOT failure for a straight pipe? Or is is based strictly on emissions?

Many thanks in advance

Making significantly more noise than normal for the type of vehicle is one potential reason for MOT failure.

The cost will be the cost of supplying or fabricating the replacement, and then fitting it. Standard exhaust systems are not usually expensive as long as they're available. Otherwise, the more bends and joints you have the more it will cost to make as a one-off. You could get a sense of how much of the exhaust system needs replacing by looking under the vehicle - a back box delete would be a smaller job than replacing the whole system out to the headers.

A colleague recently obtained quotes for a custom exhaust (standard spec) for his car as the system is no longer available off the shelf.
Quotes were about £800 (excluding the front section).

It may be cheaper for you to just get some silencers fitted into the 4 inch system.

Maybe silencers are the way forward. I’m trying to reduce costs. Will an ATS place fo that or is it best to go to a custom exhaust shop?

Hell no - don't go to those for anything except bog standard widely available parts fitted off the shelf.

For a custom exhaust you want either a custom exhaust specialist, or a general purpose fabricator, or anyone involved in motorsporty stuff. It's technically easy, you just need somebody prepared to put up with the faff of all the fitting work.

You could try someone like Powerflow?

Longlife exhausts make custom exhausts and have branches round the country, nearest to you seems to be Basingstoke.

If it's a standard vehicle, I'm sure it is possible to buy a standard exhaust for it.

I would also doubt it has a 4" pipe right from the engine to tailpipe. So does only some need changed ? or it all ?

Profusion Customs are not too far. But I know nothing of their work, just that they sell various parts.

I'd struggle to recommend anything Powerflow. Despite it being a franchise style setup, with independent "fabricators" all over the country, pretty much anything I've seen by any dealer has been complete and utter crap.

Simpson Race exhausts are Slough, but maybe at the higher end of work if that's what you're after.
