EDIT: I meant Volvo 940. 1996 P reg with 100k on the clock so pretty young really!

Any tips on changing one of these? It's a 2.3 turbo. My dad's has just gone and is pissing water out of a small gap between the head and block on the exhaust side when the engine's running I've done my Tiger's before (2lt Pinto) and it doesn't look too tricky.

We really can't afford to pay a garage at the moment as, bizzarly, my mum's Punto's head gasket blew a couple of months back!

Not having much luck at the moment

Shouldn't be too hard - once you've taken all the inlet tract etc off, theres plenty of room to work round it in that massive engine bay.
Surprised it went really.

So are we! It's always been serviced on the button etc. and Volvos are supposed to be good for 200k so a bit unlucky we think.

Kitt you may be supprised but these engines do through a lot of rods though the side of the block's.

Well, we sorted it . Thankfully it was just the gasket that went, as you can see in the second pic.

Looking at the general state of it, I would say it was going to go in a number of places, as the coolant was slowly eating away at it.

Head was totally flat once we'd cleaned it up and it all went together pretty easily. If the car wasn't a turbo it would have taken a lot less time, as that was very fiddly removing and reattaching. Looking at the turbo has got me thinking though, would it fit my Tiger

I would consider flushing the coolant through a few times, it shouldn't be making the gasket look like that

Also check you're using the proper coolant, there are a few different sorts about (sorry I don't know the ins and outs)

Well done!
I'm sure your mum's thrilled to bits that you're using the kitchen wood laminate flooring to put the used cylinder head gaskets on.
Good man!
