starter motor - mk 4 Golf
Discussion
Hi All
I have a MK 4 GOLF 1.6 AUTO (98)
Went to drive car this morning but would not start. I called breakdown MotorAssist and the mechanic who attended said its the starter motor. I had driven 120 miles 2 days before without any issues)
Would you know how easy it is to get a replacement starter motor please? Will need to get fixed Tuesday now because of the BH
Cheers

Getting hold of a replacement should be easy (E.g. ECP list them as in stock, not sure exactly which one your car has but they are all showing as available).

The issue might be getting someone to fit it for you so quickly.

Did the AA guy actually do any tests or even touch the starter motor/check it's getting 12v?
I've had a fair number of old VWs and a sticky starter motor can often be fixed by using a long extension bar or screwdriver and simply smacking the top of the starter motor.
Usually you can hear if the starter gear is trying to move and doesn't fully extend to engage with the ring gear on your flywheel as you get a high pitch whine noise.
If there is absolutely no noise from the starter turn check the terminals on it , the trigger wire from the ignition switch can corrode or completely fall off rendering your starter useless, it's the smallest of the wires connected to the starter.

On aka keerlys comments I decided to call back to breakdown service and informed them unhappy no tests were carried out on car and was not confident correct diagnosis had been given
They agreed to send another mechanic from different company yesterday
He did carry out tests and said that it was not the starter motor snd there was no power to the ignition switch
I am getting it collected today to be taken to a garage
Fed up as only had exhaust changed on the Thursday, drove on Friday and would not start Saturday
When I collected from quick fit on Thursday I had had one episode would not start but then quickly did with revs
I wonder if anyone could have happened when car mounted on ramp and exhaust changed to cause this as never had problem starting before
