have a diagnosed head gasket failure on a 2.0 tdci Mondeo. no shame in it having clocked up 250k miles in 5 1/2 years but having never done a headgasket in a modern diesel i'm at a bit of a loss.

Garage is pushing for a replacement engine which seems to run £2000-£2500 which seems absurd on a car thats probably worth that atm.
can anyone advise on the issues with doing a head gasket on a modern diesel and advise why it would be better to just replace the engine. it seems crazy to me that your buying an engine with what 3 month warranty rather than pulling apart a known unit and spending half that (just a guess) on a proven repair.

any thoughts?

How has this been diagnosed ? and how does it currently run etc etc ?

And how much a replacement engine is vs the cars value is not their concern. Their concern may be longevity of any "repair". Although this also depends on what exactly a "replacement" engine is ? Just another second hand one, or a properly reconditioned engine with a solid warranty ?

And until you spend all the labour to take your engine apart, time, money....only then to establish whether it is repairable. If you're happy do pay for that up front, I'd see no reason why any garage would not do this.
It may reduce the overall bill...or push it up even further if other problems are found

Isn't HG failure on the Pug 2.0 pretty unusual?

yes but this ones north of 250k miles now. have no reason to doubt the garage they look after all our fleet stuff. just very unusual to be finding a modern diesel with HGF even with those miles.
