Car started making a loud knocking sound, I stopped and got towed home. Drained the oil today and there's a fair amount of swarf.

Worth trying to get it reconditioned or just new engine time?

Worth doing any more diagnosis or is it just wasted effort at this point? If not, what's a good next step? Dropping the sump is a pain as the front axle fouls it so I'd have to remove that to get it off.

It depends on how much you want to spend and how long you want keep the car.

would you change the engine yourself ? If you are you might as well pull the sump off and have a look. Pull the bearing cap off the one furthest away from the oil pump and see what damage there is, however if you have already found metal then its pretty much scrap.

How can anyone tell you that without knowing the vehicle and engine?

If it's in good condition it might be worth iro 10k in which case it's probably worth the cost of replacing the engine. If it's an old clunker, you'll have more of a judgement call to make. I'd expect a recon engine fitted to be into four figures but you'd want to get some quotes.

It is in good condition. Chassis has no rot and everything else is solid. Definitely looking at repair rather than scrap.

I think I'd be lucky to get an engine for under a grand tbh and that's without cost of fitting.

sounds worth pulling the engine and having a look at the shells, also worth using a magnet on the swarf, it its magnetic then its unlikely to be a bearing, but def worth a look, nothing is un fixable, its just the cost can be to much, maybe something simple, i hope so for you, let us know what you find

Majority of the swarf is non-magnetic, there's at least one piece that is magnetic though.
