Hi looking for a bit of help, despite being a bit of a “lurker” on here.

I’m looking at buying a Renaultsport Twingo, to keep the mileage off my Civic and I’ve spoken to someone who seems like a good bloke with one to sell which looks in good condition and he’s owned it for about seven years with lots of history.

However he experienced a “knocking” whilst driving it about six months ago so took it straight to his local garage where the timing belt then failed whilst they were testing it. This resulted in them then dismantling the engine to replace two exhaust valves, belt and sprocket. Since then it doesn’t appear the car has been driven much but not sure on that.

What’s the thoughts on the reliability of the car in the future? The garage that did the work are a non franchise, family owned, one with good reviews.

Any help, thoughts appreciated!

If it's running fine now it'll carry on doing so - if you're really worried you could ask to get it compression tested.

FWIW I had a 172 snap its cambelt, ruining all the valves. Head off, 16 new valves lapped in, new head gasket/timing belt etc etc and it ran beautifully for another 2 years until I sold it (including track days, the lot).
