Alfa Mito limp mode & running extremely loud
Discussion
Evening all,
Firstly, I’ve also posted this to the Alfa board - hope that doesn’t break forum etiquette and apologies if so!
My 2010 Alfa Mito 1.6 diesel has just started running extremely loud and can’t rev past 2000rpm. Everything seemed to be running fine earlier and the symptoms seemed to materialise out of thin air when I downshifted at a roundabout (not sure if the downshift was just a coincidence). Immediately felt the loss of power and the engine noise increase - it’s very rough and clattery now.
I thought it could be the DPF but there’s no lights on the dash indicating any issue - although I still wouldn’t rule it out as I haven’t taken it on a long journey for a while now. The timing belt was done only 8,000 miles ago, although I don’t think the symptoms would match an issue with that?
Any help or ideas would be appreciated, I’m not the most mechanically inclined so am struggling with this. It being Sunday tomorrow with most garages near me closed doesn’t help the situation either .

Firstly it won't be in "limp home mode" as there would be warning lights.
Secondly, as above, what you are describing should be immediately obvious to any competent mechanic.
Thirdly, don't drive it as any more running can only risk doing more damage, if you are with the AA/RAC etc, get them out, if not a mobile mechanic or a garage that will tow it in.
