Hello all, this is a bit of a 'what would you do' question.

My sister in law has a Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost, 35k miles, 15 plate I think.

Lately she's been getting low oil pressure light and a rattle on startup, however it now sounds like a bag of spanners.

Local garage I use told her to get rid of it and not spend money on it - didn't charge her so I guess they haven't spent any time on it and figure it's a headache.

Any common issues that could be suggested to another garage to look for? I know that might just be trying to patch up an engine which possibly has knackered internals now. I dont know anything about these engines, and my DIY spannering is limited to basic servicing tasks.

Replacement engine, worth considering or just buying someone else's problems?

If its rattling then its knackered, normally lack of servicing or low oil level, however not always. The most likely cause is the oil pump , the cambelt is also a wet belt, budget around £3500 to do it right, recon engine turbo etc (turbo is furthest away from the oil pump)

Ford were sometimes covering them under warranty. I'd make sure it went no more than 12500miles or 12 months for each and every service.

OK, cheers for the quick response.

When the garage I usually use gave her such a quick 'get rid of it' response I suspected they knew it wasn't worth pulling apart to diagnose.

If she’s been running it with low oil pressure then it’s going to be knackered. I’d want rid regardless.

It’s not like a 1L fiesta eco boost is difficult to replace, there’s probably hundreds for sale on PH/AT right now.

Get rid and replace with a non knackered one. Just my opinion.

There are lots of knackered ones out there, just look on ebay at the amount of spares or repairs

The belt brakes up into the oil blocks the pump and kills the engine, it happens on the Pug 1.0, 1.2 as well.

Problem solved...car was part-exchanged.

£3700 for a broken 8yr old 1.0 fiesta, I couldn't believe it. That was full disclosure, they started the car, knew it's condition.

Wet belts shed fibers and block the oil pickup

Probably what's happened here

Really terrible engine's with many issues

Still hell of a price for basically a parts car now

Many things win awards....all great when they're brand new. How they stand the test of time is another matter...but that isn't a factor with their awards.

Thanks for the valuable insight, that would never have occurred to me.

Such things never occur to a lot of people.

Hence why we get some of the wonderful threads we do here !

The other thing is it's an 8yr old car, as far as Ford are concerned it's done it's time and should be scrapped.
Not that I agree with that, it's the view of the car manufacturers though.

The wet belt thing was described as "sealed for life / 100k miles" or something.

I remember thinking I don't consider 100k miles to be "life".

Very clever engines in some ways, and deserved the awards for innovation (e.g. the water cooled exhaust headers, that sort of thing) but obvious maintenance issues on the early ones have taken the shine off them.

I also found our 125bhp 1.0 EcoBoost Fiesta to be nippy OR economical, never both. If you drive it normally, MPG was terrible. If you nurse it and keep it off boost, it wouldn't keep up with traffic. I got rid.

Hi guys sorry to intervene I've got a 65 reg fiesta and engine rattle

It started on Thursday & had a mechanic come out Friday who done full service on it, didn't make any difference & rattle got louder & oil light stayed on

The engine is still turning over but very loud noise

Do you think if I take it into the garage they will change wetbelt would that fix the problem

It's done 85k by the way thanks a million to everyone that replies 🙏 🙂

Would it not have made more sense to get this "mechanic" to investigate the noise, instead of servicing it ?

If it's making a load of noise and you've no oil pressure.....it could well be fked. Perhaps a bit late now to have someone investigate the noise.

And no, changing more random parts will not make any sense whatsoever.

The noise was only intermittent when he was doing the service so he thought might just need oik change and service & after he changed everything the noise did actually go for a while then I drove it and it came back

So the RAC came out again Friday & that's wen they told me it was the wet belt

Investigate the alleged fault properly, and then make decisions.

I would say its too late now. I would budget for a new engine or scrap it.
