Hi all!

Quick question about the service intervals on my 2014 Skoda Rapid 1.6 TDI Manual. I bought the car about 6 months ago on 79k and got it serviced at a local indy Skoda garage at 85k as apparently it had been serviced before I bought it. Car has near full service history and bar one or two age related creaks is in immaculate condition.

I do about 40k/yr of mixed driving; I drive from the south to Scotland once every two months and frequently bomb it up the length of the M3 but I also do food delivery every weekend, sometimes more. Skoda recommends a service every 10k for city driving and 20k for motorway driving which leaves me a dilemma, how often do I service my car as I do almost exactly half and half of each type of driving and four services a year seems uneconomical. That said I don't want to be cutting any corners and would happily change the oil & filter every few months if meant reaching 300k, I just don't want to spend that money and effort for nothing.

Second little question is: Is it worth changing the gearbox and diff oil? I rang a Skoda dealership and they said the gearboxes are sealed for life but that seems unreasonable to me, likewise with the diff. The car's just reached 95k so it seems sensible to get these things done before 100k.

Oh and don't worry I'm not paying dealer prices, I do most of the maintenance myself bar the big stuff!

Oil and filter every 10k.

Decent oil is £30, £5-10 for a filter. Takes an hour if you're being methodical.

I'd probably do the other filters yearly on that mileage.

It depends how much you want to invest. You could keep the car in decent nick or you could consider the whole thing consumable, which at that mileage could be 2 or 3 years, rinse and repeat.

Also definitely worth doing the gearbox and diff oil.

Do your oil n filter every 9 to 10 k with fully synthetic oil. Correct spec.
Air filter every 40k
Fuel filter every 40k (if ur using crepey diesel every 20k)

Gearbox oil defo change it now around the 80k mark. N use oem recommended spec.

My fabia is currently at 220k n I think the gearbox is goign off now not sure yet.

If the car/transport is vital to you....be very pre-emptive.

When I was doing 90k a year in my van, ALL filters were changed every 10k, Oil itself every 10k. Gearbox not so often, but as the oil was cheap, every 50-60k.

That and generally always keeping on top of everything, belts and usual crap.

But for the most part given the miles I ended up doing in it ( over 700k ), it really actually needed very little. But for most parts I did use dealer parts.
They were not overly expensive, and they are absolutely not the same as what is sold in the aftermarket as OEM. Some parts it will not matter, some it definitely does ( springs, suspension parts, brake discs, pads ).
Filters perhaps not so much, although it my case aftermarket fuel filters simply did not fit and were made differently.

Agree with the above, engine every 10k with good oil and good quality filter.

Buy oils in bulk and they're cheap as chips, buy reputable makes not necessarily accessory shop stuff, Exol for example is good well priced oil but lots of other suppliers out there, i'd also change the gearbox oil once a year at that mileage, you can't get cheaper better maintenance.

If you’re doing your own maintenance that often, an oil extractor, or one of the drain taps that you install in to the drain plug permanently might be a good idea.
It’ll save the wear on the sump threads and possibly your knees and back if you go down the extractor route.

The sealed for life comment from Skoda regarding drivetrain oils roughly translates as ‘by the time it needs changing the lease cars are no longer our problem’. Change it at 40k and see what state the oil is in and then let that guide you from there.
A magnetic box plug might be a good idea if you can find one that will fit.
