So I'm in the process of swapping a B18c4 into my classic mini, it's nearly done and I've got around the DVLA V5 hurdle and new engine code/swap is all confirmed on their database/my new V5.

My car is 1986 and the engine is from a 1999 Honda Civic. Am I correct in thinking that I *won't* need a catalytic converter, as mot laws's are done off the age of the car not the newer engine. As my mini was originally just an idle test I assume it should be that to. That's the jist I've got anyway, but someone who I know it's an mot tester and said I'll need a cat as my engine is newer so it will be done off that.... So just double checking really. Thanks for any replies 😁

IANAL but I think your MOT tester has got it right.

The MOT manual says that a pre-2002 car fitted with an older engine than the car should get tested to the standard applicable to the engine.

For your classic with a newer engine, it should be tested to the car age.

If the MOT tester disagrees, ask him to show where in the manual he is led to this conclusion.

Yeah I'll wait to see what other people say as I've also got few other mates who are mot testers aswell and said it's done on the vehicle age so bit of a grey area haha

"Vehicles fitted with a different engine
If a vehicle first used before 1 September 2002 is fitted with an engine that’s older than the vehicle, you must test it to the standards applicable for the engine. The vehicle presenter must have proof of the age of the engine.

If a vehicle first used on or after 1 September 2002 is fitted with a different engine, you must test it to the emissions standards for the age of the vehicle."
www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-priv...

Your car is pre 2002 & your engine is from 1999 so your engine is newer than the car & emissions should be tested for the age of the car which you give as 1986.
CO <= 3.5%
HC <= 1200 ppm

This is correct. Car is older than the engine, so car age emissions limits apply. Which a Honda lump should be able to breeze through!
