A friend of mine has a Hyundai Getz 1.4 petrol n.a. which is using a lot of oil. Probably a litre in 1000 miles. Less than 90k on the clock.

Recommended oil is 5w-30 or 10w-40

Current oil Triple QX 5w-40

I am going to check / replace the PCV, but would it be worth trying a different oil as well? A higher quality one or a different grade?

Stick to the recommended viscosity and specification.

I had problems with tappet noise on startup, and whilst not excessive consumption, more top ups between oil changes than I'd like.

All cured with a switch away from Triple QX.

I bet the service history is sketchy i.e missed/over-run oil and filter changes, it wont be the PCV valve as problem with that will cause system lean condition causing drivabilty woes and poor idle and MIL illuminated , not oil consumption

I know the two previous owners going back to when the car was new / nearly new. They are not people who would've caned it. It may not have been serviced as frequently as would be ideal recently perhaps but I can't imagine what they could've done to it to make it use this much oil after 80k.

I have bought 5w-30 to go in but I expect this'll burn off even faster than the 5w-40 Triple QX?

5w-40 is not a recommended grade but I though it was sensible on an engine which is using oil to go up a grade?

If the crankcase ventilation system is allowing pressure to build up then it can certainly cause an increase in oil consumption.

Of course wink and hence why i mentioned the SH bit , that would of at to see some serious abuse (lack of oil an filter changes) for the PCV pipework to get blocked its vented at the other end scratchchin

I was thinking that the PCV could be stuck in the open position and continually discharging oil vapour into the inlet. I am not sure that the amounts of air going through that way would inevitably throw up errors as it isn't unmetered- it is air which is getting into the crankcase past the rings.

So have you checked the PCV system hoses valve etc yet? a stuck open/faulty PCV valve is an UNMETERED air leak so should cause big positive/richer fuel trim values thus hopefully setting a DTC lean code , the reason why I mentioned previously poor servicing is usually on small stuff/cars if the piston ring oil control stack carbon/gum up its curtains this is more likely with stretched oil servicing/knackered oil , only cure for this is an engine strip sadly , IME it wont be valve stem seals either unless previously poorly repaired/got at etc , factory asian stem seals are usually of high quality and very long lasting along with the rest of the vehicle .... if maintained of course

Apparently the oil consumption settled right down? I did wonder if it had been driven very gently by previous owners and needed a bit of exercise.
