So…. Recently got a 2006 Octavia vrs. Coupe of days ago it started making a whistle/whine that comes on from 1000rpm and raises with the revs. I’m trying to figure out if it’s a boost leak or a dying turbo.

Initially I thought the turbo, as it has a ‘siren’ noise to it (google called it the death whine). However, it’s now accompanied by a suck/whoosh when the revs rise, making me think it’s a boost leak.

If I disconnect one of the vacuum hoses, there is no boost when driving (as no boost pressure), and also no siren noise. Would this count out the turbo dying? I assume it will be spooling up regardless, so I’d hear it regardless of boost if it was the bearings or impellers going?

Any advice greatly received!

If you disconnected the vacuum hose that controls the wastegate then the turbo won't be spooling up so won't have any significant load on the compressor. Can you remove the air inlet hose from the compressor and check for excessive radial movement in the impeller?

Thanks for that, as I suspected- Can’t get in about as the turbo inlet is too long for fingers. Garage have confirmed it’s the turbo yesterday unfortunately-just didn’t want the hassle and cost of a new one.
