My girlfriends dad has just bought a 4 year old yaris 1.5 to replace an old punto 1.2. They are both rated at the same MPG but the yaris seems to be drinking a lot, like 30mpg a lot.

Any ideas?

Has it been serviced? How are you checking the mpg, by the gauge, or by filling it up, driving for a good distance and then filling again? Are the brakes dragging?

They might be "officially" in similar MPG territory but go on honestjohns to check real world mpg figures from real owners before you start looking for problems that may not be there.

Wife's previous Clio 1.6 would only ever do 32mpg when driven steadily, I used to get 31mpg out of my 3.0 Sport 5 series driven hard.

Hahah and yet a hot v S205 C63 averages 28mpg with mid 30’s on long runs.

Yaris and Clio must be what 100bhp machines so nearly 5x less power and likely the c63 wagon isn’t far off 70% heavier too.

HonestJohn RealMPG reckons you should be getting around 50 mpg, so there is something wrong.

Take it to a garage and get them to have a look at it. Obvious stuff as mentioned could be incorrectly inflated tyres, not had a service in a while (oil change, air filter) binding brakes, etc.

I think these Yaris have the NR series engine, that can suffer a clogged EGR valve from as little as 20,000 miles - this could impact fuel economy. I think they are also direct injection and can get coke deposits on the intake valves, which will really damage mpg, so perhaps these bits could need sorting. Doing lots of short journeys, e.g. start-stop city driving tends to exacerbate these problems.
