Advice - Qashqai DCI - PCV valve buggered?
Discussion
Hello all
Im after a bit of advice - not that good on mechanics generally and don't want to go wasting money if I can avoid it.
Ive got a 09 plate Nissan Qashqai J10 with the 1.5litre DCI (renault) engine, which Im looking to sell in the near future.
Last year it had a major oil leak which resulted in clutch going, cam belt also replaced due to the degree of contamination.
Not THAT long after this it started to blow white/ blue smoke intermittently. This got worse gradually and eventually Turbo went completely.
Turbo and intercooler lines were heavily oil contaminated when they were removed. Turbo was replaced and now runs fine.
From cold there is NO blue smoke whatsoever and it passed its MOT emissions test recently with no problems.
I generally just use this car for commuting occasionally. Ive noticed a pattern now which is that on the way to work in the morning (14 miles, 30 minutes), there is no smoke whatsoever. Usually on the way back, after the engines warmed up a bit it blows blue smoke for about 5-10 minutes then stops and is clear again all the way home.
If I go on a long journey, again the first 40 minutes or so is usually fine then it intermittently blows smoke for 5 minutes or so before stopping, and then repeats again every hour or so probably.
My usually trusted garage mechanic doesnt seem to know whats going on - seems a bit over-reliant on fault codes via the ODB port
Someone else I spoke to suggested it was the piston rings, but my thinking is that surely that would cause oil to be burnt off much more frequently, and certainly from cold as surely when the oil is cold its most likely to lead round the rings?
Ive become convinced that this is a problem with the PCV valve with oil draining into the turbo excessively due to high pressure in the crank-case.
Before anyone asks, the oil consumption of the car is high, and its not had any engine warning lights since the turbo was changed.
Am I right in thinking this is more likely PCV valve failure rather than piston rings? If so Ill get it changed and see what happens..
Thanks in advance!
